Audi TT 2008 3D modeling from A to Z – 3DS Max

Hi, i’ve made this tutorial in 16 days and I hope that anyone will understand it. First off all, i’m sorry if there are gramatical mystakes, english is not my language. If you think that you can make something in 3DS max, then post your tutorial like me. Doesn’t matter if your tutorial its a basic or advanced tutorial. I think that you know those words :”the knowledge is the food of the soul”

About tutorial :

- In this tutorial we will model a Audi TT 2008. Below, i have prepared the document. You can download it from HERE (its for 3ds max 2009). In that document you have the blueprint sliced and the planes in 3ds max. You need to put those blueprints on those planes and we can start to model. I think that is better if anyone will download my file because we will have the same documents.

1. After you have downloaded my file, open it with 3DS Max and put the blueprints linke in the picture.

1

2. After you have put the blueprints on those planes, select all the planes > right click > object properties. Uncheck “Show Frozen in Gray” and check “Freeze”. After this procces you cannot move your blueprints accidentaly when you will model the car.

2

3. Let’s start to model. Make a tube at the front wheel like in my picture. You have the values of the tube in the picture :

3

4. Having the tube selected, right click > convert to > editable poly. Then detele the polygons which are from interior.

4

5. Now delete the polygons that are under the car

5

6. Choose “Vertex” from modifier menu. We will start with the vertex who is on the top. After you have selected that vertex, move hit at his place. If you will check the photo you will understand more.

6

7. The same thing we will make with the others vertices. I recommed to checl the photos at each step

7

8. Nou choose “Edges” , select those 4 edges like in my image, hold shift and drag to left. Be carefull to drag them straight

8

9. Select “Vertex” and move the vertices in the same spots as me. REMEBER :” each vertex need to be in the same spot in each view”. You can press ALT + X to make the plane transparent.

9

10. Move those 3 vertices which are in the exterior of the front panel and move them along the line (car line)

10

11. Select the vertical edge from the top and give she an chamfer ( 16.0 )

11

12. Move those 2 edges in the same spots as me to fit with the lines of the car

12

13. Make the same thing like in the image beneath. Extrude that edge

13

14. Check the photo for a better explaination

14

15. Move that vertex in his place (same view , same spot). Use the left, up, and front view to place the vertex in his spot

15

16. Move the vertices from the right side of the panel , like in the image

16

17. Select the edges > Shift and drag out to right to extrude the edges. Dont forget to move the vertices on the line of the car after this procces

17

18. Let’s start to model the hood. Select the edges at the top, and extrude them like me. And after this , check the vertices

18

19. Do the same this at those 4 edges which are at the front of the car

19

20. Now, we need to weld some vertices. Use target weld , or weld to do this step :)

20

21. Now we will use the same steps (18-19) because is the same thing. You can you those steps until you will finish the front part

21

22. After you have made like me , use “Cut” to make some edges like in the picture

22

23. Now we have some new vertices. Move those vertices at the same level with other vertices/edges because we dont need bumps on our car

23

24. Check the image

24

25. Use the same steps until now to model the hood

25

26. to the front bumper same thing :)

26

27. To weld the hood with the bumper do like me. Select the edges like in image , then click on “Bridge”.

27

28. Now, if you have a hole in your body (car’s body , not yours) , select “Border” and then click on the edges which form that hole and then clip on “Cap”

28

29. Using “Cut”, cut the plane to make like mine :

29

30. We need to delete some edges. Verify the image to see what i will delete. Attention : After you have erased the edges , you need to erase the vertices too.
Do not press delete when you want to delete the edges or the vertices. Just select edge/vertex > right click > remove

30a30b

31. We will move to the center of the car. Extrude the edges like in my image. Dont forget to put the vertices at their place. After this, select the car’s body > right click > freeze selection. We will continue at this a lil bit later

31

32. Let’s start to model the rear bumper : make a plane and move/model it like in the image, i hope that you kmow how to model it, right click > convert into > editable poly etc.

32

33. Continue with the rest of the rear bumper. Below you have 2 images to help you if you are stuck

33a33b poza 33b

34. We will continue with the same methods. Do the same as me :

35. At this stept you have 2 pictures. In the left picture you have the first “sub”-step and in the right you have the 2nd. Where i’ve made the circle you need to weld the verticec. I REPET : Dont forget the vertices

36. Continue with the same methods until now

37. Before welding the 2 parts of the car, extrude the edges like in the image beneath. Same view , same spot ;)

38.Now big attention : right click > Unfreeze all. Then first thing you will do is to select the planes with the blueprints and after you have select those planes > right click > freeze selecton. Only the planes, not the front part of the car

39. Select the rear part , right click > Attach and then select the front part. If you have done this step, the 2 parts should be in a single object

39

40. Select those 6 edges ( 3 on each side ), then from modifier menu , click on “Bridge”

40

41. Now we will continue with that part wich is near taillight

41

42. Continue like until now… extruding edges, using weld to weld vertices and we put vertices at thei place

42

43. At the rear panel, select the same edges as me, then right click > choose “Scale” , hold shift and extrude/make smaller those edges

43

44. As you know, we will move the vertices

44

45. Nou move the vertices to the exterior of the panel (not much , just a lil’ bit)

45

46. I’ve created some edges using “Cut” . Check the photo to see about what I’m talking

46

47. We will climb up to the rooftop by extruding those 3 edges which will cover the rear window

47

48. Select those 6 edges ( 3up, 3 down) then click on that little square from “Bridge” and put 2 segments :

48

49. Advance to the front of the car :

49

50. Select the same edges as me :

50

51. Having those edges selected, click on that little square from “Chamfer” and at chamfer amount put 11.0 and at segments : put 1
51

52. we need to weld some vertices. Check the image and usign “target weld” , weld the vertices “A” to vertices “B” :

52

53. Select and remove the vertex (check the photo to see what vertex)

53

54. Dont forget to put the vertices at their places

54

55. Now we can come back at the front part :

55

56.

56

57.

57

58.

58

59. Done with the shape of the car :D .. You can choose from modifier list “turbosmooth” sau “meshsmooth” to see the result until now

59

60. Using “Cut”, make those edges

60

61. At the tailight i’ve made a little mystake, sry :| … we will fix this in no time. If you have made the same shape as me (left side of the picture), the select the edge that i have selected > right click > remove. Choose “Cut” to make a new edge like in the right side of the picture

61

62. Now lets start the part which is more difficult (not excesive). Select the same edges as me

62

63. Having those edges selected, apply on them a chamfer (chamfer amount 0,55)

63

64 . Attention : check each intersection of the edges and if u find the same thing like in the left side of the image, use “weld” or “target weld” to weld those vertices like in the right side of the image. If you will not modify, its possible to have some bump on your car. And before make something that you are unsure about it, I recommend to save your document

64

65. After you have weld those vertices , apply a turbosmooth or meshsmooth to verify if you have any imperfections

65

66. Let’s finish with the panels. Select the edges of the panel, right click > scale , hold shift and extrude/make smaller those edges. Then put the verices in their places

66

67. Select the same edges as me , and apply on them a chamfer 0.5

67

68. Do the same thing at the rear panel. Make smaller by choosing “scale” , holding shift and drag to the interior then move the vertices

68

69. Use “Cut” to make the contour of the headlight like in the image beneath. Only the red edges are made using “Cut”

69

70. Select the polygons which cover the headlight then press on “Detach” and name it how you want. I’ve name it “headlight”

70

71. If you have checked with turbosmooth or meshsmooth, probably the corners of the headlight arent so sharp. To make them more sharper, choose cut and make the same as me :

71

72. Choose “Border” and click on the contour of the headlight. After you have selected that hole, hold shift and drag to the interior of the car

72

73. After you have extruded that hole to the center of the car , havgin those edges still selected, click on “Cap” to fill that hole. After that the empty hole is filled with a polygon, choose “Polygons” , select that polygond then pres on “grow”

73

74. Press “Detach” , to detach those polys from the rest of the body and put waht name you want

74

75. Select the new object ( the case of the headlight ) > right click > hide unselected because we nedd to do something at this object and we can work easely if we have only this object in our sight.

75

76. If you will apply now turbosmooth or meshsmooth to this component, you will see that the shape isnt really good. So, use “Cut” to make those edges from a vertex to another :

76

77. You shoul have 6 polys, if you have more its not a big problem. Select those 6 (or more) polygons and then click on the little square from “Inset”. At “Inset type” choose group and at “Inset Amount” put 0.3

77

78. Right click > Unhide All. After all your object have appeared , choose all objects , except the car’s body > right click > hide selection. And now you will have only the planes and the body. Make those edges (with red) using “Cut”

78

79. Having the new edges selected, apply a chamfer with a value 0.5

79

80. Use “Cut” to make this contour :

80

81. Choose the same vertices as me and then move those in the interior ( just a little bit )

81

82. Select the same polygons as me, then click on that little square from “Extrude” and at “Extrusion Type” choose “Local Normal” and at “Extrusion Height” put -15

82

83. Keep those polygons still selected and move them a little bit to right , to be in the center

83

84. Select the same vertices as me , and move they a lil bit lower

84

85. Select the same edges as me and give to those edges a chamfer 0.5

85

86. Now, as we have made this place under the headlight, the same methods we will use to make that front place, where we will put the big grill. Use the same stept (79 > 85). Beneath you have a picture to see my result. Make the contour and then extrude the polys

86

87. HERE you will find a tutorial which explain you how to make a grill. After you have made the grill, choose from modifier list FFD 3×3x3 to make a shape which will fit in that place.

87

88. Let’s work at the part where we will make the big grill. Select the same edges as me :

88

89. Having the edges still selected , click on the little square from “Connect” and at “Slide” put 80 to be closer to the exterior side

89

90. Select the same vertices as me, and using “Scale” make them a little bit smaller using the X and Y

90

91. After 90th step you need to move some vertices back in their place. So , check the image to see what i’m talking about

91

92. As you can see in the bleprint, the front grill is made from 2 parts which are divided at half by an object. Whe should do this before extruding those edges , sry. Its my first tutorial. But we will fix this in no time :D . Beneath you have a polygon which need to be deleted

92

93. Ok, after you have deleted that polygon , select those ones

93

94. Extrude these polygons until you will conver the side of the deleted polygon. Which we have deleted in the step 92. Do not modify any vertex

94

95. After you have extruded those 3 polygons , in each side is a new polygon. You will delete both polygons because we dot need them :

95

96. Now you should be able to weld 2 vertices (check the photo)

96

97. Use “Cut” to make these edges >

97

98. I hope that in the 96th stept you have weld those vertices, because if you dont , you will have a ugly hole in your car. Select the same edges as me and give them a chamfer 0.2

98

99. Let’s finish with the headlight, make a cilinder with the same size as cars light

Cilinder values :

Radius : 13,5
Height : 40
Height Segments : 2
Cap Segments : 3
Sides: 18

99

100. Use the basic modeling methods until you will have these shape ( in the left side is the shape – in the right side , you have the shape turbosmoothed)

100

101. The same methods you will use to make the second cilinder :

101

102. Make a box which will deserve as signalisation/other light. Use FFD to make a shape which will fit in the headlight case:

103. We are done with the headlight, and honestly the headlight are not my strongest point

103

104. Use “Cut” to make the contour of the door :

104

105. Select the polygons which cover the side windows, and give those polygons an extrude 1.5

105

106. Having the same polygons still selected , press “Detach” an put what name you want

106

107. Select the edges which form the contour of the door and give them a chamfer like this : Chamfer Amount : 0,4 …. 1 segment …. check the box at “Open”

107

108. Detele the same polygons as me:

108

109. This is the result until now :D . I’ve applied a meshmooth ( 2 literations) but you can apply a turbosmooth also. I use meshmooth because are not so many polygons :

109

110. Select the same edges as me and give them a chamfer 0.4 , 1 segment and check that little box at Open

110

111. Select the poligons which cover the hood , then press on “Detach” and put what name you want.

111

112. Select the polygons which cover the windshield then press detach. You can use “Cut” to make the contour of the windshield is the polygons aren’t in the same shape as the windshield. Atention : if you use “Cut” dont make to many polygons. Save your document before doing this step

112

113. Use “Cut” to make those edges :

113

114. Having the new edges selected + those edges which are selected in my picture , give them a chamfer 0.2 and check the little box from “Open”

114

115. Now , check the result with meshsmooth or turbosmooth to see if there are any imperfections. If you have some bad shapes on your car, beneath you have possible modeling errors.. in the left side of the picture you have “Before” corection and in the right side , you have “After” corection

115a115b

116. Make the contour of the rear window them select the polygons which cover the window and press on “Detach”. Same thing as the windshield. My result with meshsmooth..

116

117. Make the taillight using the same methods as the headlight. Select the polygons which cover the tail light, extrude those polygons and at the corners use chamfer with a low value to make them more sharp. After you have done those “sub”-steps , select all polygons which form the case of the tail light and press on “Detach”

117

118. To make that plexiglass which cover the tail light, select the polygons from the back of the case, hold shift and drag out until at the limit

118

119. Use the basic modeling methods to model the tail light components. You can search on Google to see better what components you need to model. By the way, you can come with your own ideea :D .

119

120. Select the same edges as me and give them a chamfer with a value 0.9 (dont check the box at “open” – check only when i say)

120

121. Having those 2 edges still selected , apply on them a chamfer 0.1

121

122. Make the contour of that little red light then select the polygons which covedr him and pres “Detach”

122

123. Select the same polygons as me and give those polys an “Extrude” with -12

123

124. On the center of the car, a new polygon has formed. We dont need him, so you need to delete that polygon. See the picture if you dont know about what pilygon i’m talking about :

124

125. Select the same edges as me and apply on them a chamfer 0.3

125

126. Make the same edges as me using “Cut”. Let’s finish with the rear spoiler :

126

127. Extrude the polygons which are in my image, dont much … just a little :

127

128. Having those polygons still selected , press on “Grow” and then on “Detach”

128

129. Delete these polygons :

129

130. Make the contour of the hole from where the exhaust pipe will exit

130

131. Remove the same polygons as me

131

132. Extrude the selected edges to the interior

132

133. Select the same edges as me and give them a chamfer 0.3

133

134. Now, you cam model the exhaust pipe using a tube and the basics of modeling. You can make what exhaust you want if you have your ideas.

134

135. Select the same edges as me and give them a chamfer 0.3

135

136. Select the same edges as me :

136

137. Having those edges still selected, hold shift and drag to the interior of the car. Drag until you will have the same thickness as the wheel

137

138. Select the new polygons and press “Detach”

138

139. Create the same polygons as me to cover the back side. Use basics moethods to do this. You can use only brige , Cap and Cut :D .. very simple

139

140. Select the same edges as me and give them a chamfer 0.5

140

141. Select the same edges as in the image, hold shift and drag them to the interior of the car

141

142. After you have extruded the edges, move the vertices from each side close to the spoilers

142

143. To model the handle of the car, make the contour of that little hole, extrude the polygons a lil bit to the interior of the ca, select the polygons whicc form that little hole and press detach. Use a box to make the handle

143

144. I have made the mirror using 2 boxes and basics of 3D modeling.

144

145. Now, you need to make the rims, tyres, brake discs. Below you have some tutorials which will help you to model those objects

Rim modeling tutorial
Tyre modeling tutorial (will be posted in short time)
Brake disc modeling tutorial

145

146. Select all the objects that you have, the go to modifier list and choose “Symetry”. In the symetry sub-menu you will find “mirror”. Choose Mirror and use move tool to make the other side of the car.

146

147. On the center of those 2 halfs, verify if the vertices are weld. If they arent, go to modifier list, choose “edit poly”. Or you can make right click > convert to > editable poly, but i dont recommend because if you will need to make any modifications on your car, you need to make on both sides. Let’s came back to our vertices. After you have choosed ” edit poly” from modifier menu, use WELD not “target weld” for those vertices. Using weld they will be welded in the center of the car.

148. Let’s model the front grill. Below you have my model. I’ve used some cilinders, boxes and bend to make this object

148

149. To make those 4 rings, use a tube with the values which are below and then make 3 copies of that ring. Convert the ring in a editable poly then attach all rings together to make a single object.

Radius 1: 12.0
Radius 2: 9.0
Height : 2.5

Height Segments : 3
Cap Segments : 1
Sides : 18

150. Use “meshsmooth” turbosmooth” to make some surfaces more smoother, assign the materials and render you car. below is my result :D

So, if you really appreciate my work, and if you want to keep this site alive, you can donate a small amount of money to pay the hosting service because i cannot afford right now. On this site you have all for free, 3D models, very good tutorials, and soon will be more stuffs… so… its all for free and will be forever like this if you will help us to pay the hosting service :) .. If we cannot pay the hosting service, the webiste will be turned off in this summer …
